Allusion is used in the story the old man and the sea when Santiago talks about baseball. He relates baseball to fishing using allusion. The Yankees are like catching a fish to Santiago. He thinks that since the Yankees can't loose then he can't go without catching a fish. “The Yankees cannot lose.” Page 27. He can do whatever the Yankees can do but he does it from the perspective of fishing. Another allusion of baseball is Dick Sisler. To Santiago Sisler can hit home runs extremely far and they are very impressive. To Santiago they are the allusion for him catching a very big fish or a huge score. “But then I think of Dick Sisler and those great drives in the old park. There was nothing ever like them. He hits the longest ball I have ever seen.” Page 35. He thinks of Sisler when he thinks about a fish that he can catch that will also be a big fish.The great DiMaggio is used most for allusion. Santiago always indirectly and directly thinks about how he relates to DiMaggio. When he thinks about his old age and catching the fish he thinks about DiMaggio and his bone spur. “But I must have confidence and I must be worthy of the great DiMaggio who does all things perfectly even with the pain of the bone spur in his heel.” Page 115 this fish is to Santiago in his old age is wining the most important thing in his life like DiMaggio with his bone spur winning the World Series.
