1. Life in the 1930s was difficult because of the dustbowl, in the story it states that the farms crops were being consumed by the dust and all the animals were dying because there lungs were being filled with dust. Also two people died from dust pneumonia. Many people were trying to leave and some people abandoned there families and hopped onto a train out of the dust.
2. How do you think the author was able to vividly describe the dust bowl?
2. The author vividly described the dust bowl because maybe she live in a town that was consumed by dust, or she had family that was affected by the dust. She might have gone and interviewed people who lived in the dustbowl.
3. What are the most interesting facts you learned about everyday life in the 1930's?
3. The most interesting facts I have learned about the everyday life in the 1930s are that many people had different remedies to get the dust out of your system or stop the dust from hurting your throat, some people affected by the great depression had to move to places called Hoovervilles or shantytowns which were made of newspaper boxes basically anything you can find. Also dust pneumonia was a terrible thing but it was very interesting because it was like pneumonia but it was worse because you didn't need to have a infection you could be healthy but if that dust got in your lungs you would die.
MAKING CONNECTIONS:
4. List several disasters that have occurred across the world or locally that might compare to the great dust storms of the 1930's.
4. Hurricane sandy, Earthquake in Haiti, typhoon in Philippines, and the Tsunami in Japan.
5. How did the people that lived through these natural disasters cope? Explain
5. The people that lived in these areas coped with these natural disasters by rebuilding what they had. Most of them had to rely on donations and living in shelters for a long time and some still do. It is very difficult to cope with disasters because they destroy all you have and all you can do is rebuild.
