Racism
What is racism?
Racism is the insulting of another person because of there race. To abuse or make fun of someone because you think your race is superior to theres.
Past Example of Racism Miscegenation laws
During the 1940s a law was passed in multiple states which banned intermarriage between african americans and caucasians. If you disobeyed this law you would be imprisoned for up to seven years. You could be fined 100 to 1000 dollars. This law also banned marriage of indians or asians between caucasians. States in the north were the first to get the law lifted in the 1950s because it was declared unconstitutional. 96% of white americans disapproved of the law being lifted. These laws were also based on your religion. But, The United States was not the only place banning intermarriage. Many places around the world disapproved of two people of different races getting married. In Nazi Germany they did not want anyone marrying Jewish people because they considered them as wasteful life. These laws lasted from the 1940s to about the 1970s. For thirty years unless you were the same race as someone else you weren't aloud to marry them. The child could be killed because he was considered impure. In 1947 the South African Government banned marriage of africans and whites and if you were african you weren't aloud in South Africa. A ban was soon later passed that completely banned marriage between two races in South Africa. The law that started in South Africa in 1949 was not uplifted until 1985. In China because many immigrants migrated there they put up a intermarriage law because there were so many people there population would become extremely high. In conclusion this is a example of racism because these people are being considered inferior because of there race and aren't allowed to marry other people because they are considered superior.
My opinion on the intermarriage laws are they were unfair and ruined people lives. The fact that you could be arrested for loving someone is cruel and unfair. Let people marry who they want to marry. Because the government of these places were racist they didn't care the situation, unless you were caucasian you couldn't marry someone who was caucasian. This situation could have been handled much differently, for example the government could have suggested not to intermarriage because other people would look at you look you were a freak of nature not threaten to fine you a thousand dollars or put you in prison. The only country that had a reason to have a law was China because if they didn't there country would become overpopulated. All the other countries put up the law because they did not want people to mix with impure people. Another thing that could have been done would be to not have the law at all. Most people did not even marry people of other races because they didn't approve of there race because they thought they were the superior race. Affects that these laws caused were many people were imprisoned, lost a lot of money, or were looked at differently by others. They were treated as if by marrying that race they would be treated like that race. The children of these couples would be treated like rejects because of there ethnicity.
Present Example of Racism: Obama
When Obama ran for president he received a large amount of hate because of his skin color. He had to start being guarded by the secret service six months earlier than other candidates were because he was receiving death threats. At one of John McCain's Rallies people were shouting to kill Obama. People were saying that his birth certificates were fake and he wasn't born in the United States. At town hall meetings people carried caricatures of Obama and represented him as Adolf Hitler. People were against Obama for president because they believed that this country was for white people and that is who it should be governed by. Not everyone dislikes Obama because of his race some people just have different opinions than him, but most people don't support him because of his color. There are hate pages on Facebook which insult Obama because of his race. They don't care about what he is doing politically they just attack him because of his color. They post photos of him with a afro because that is a common African American stereotype. Most of the photos the Hate group post are representing him doing stereotype things such as playing basketball or eating KFC. He and his family are represented as what racial people think all africans and african americans do. Obama is being bullied by people who think that they are the superior race. People are using old stereotypes from when the world was more racial against Obama because they just despise African Americans. Therefore this shows racism because Obama is being judged because of his ethnicity.
Obama was treated disrespectfully when he started running for president and became president because of his race. He was being insulted by his "fellow americans" because they didn't want to be under a african americans rule. The fact that people were yelling to kill him and sending him death threats was foolish for the fact that he is just like everyone else. Its understandable that people disagree with him politically but to just repeatedly insult him and mentally abuse him because they don't like his color is ridiculous. This situation could have easily been handled differently, for example if people didn't judge Obama because of his ethnicity than he could be a better president. These people insulting him are effecting the way he thinks because they are bringing him as our leader down . Also another way to handle this situation is to have considered him politically, if it wasn't for the fact Obama was better politically he might not have been elected. Affects of the incident are Obama is still receiving hate because of his skin and there are many racial jokes against him.
